Jupiter Jubilee - February 6, 2010

The Stormwater and Me public education program participated in the 2010 Jupiter Jubilee, to help educate the public about pollution in our stormwater and how to help prevent it.

The Jubilee is an annual civic fair organized by the Town of Jupiter and the 2010 theme was “Uniquely Jupiter.” We took the opportunity to present a map of the Town’s stormwater/waterway system, so residents and visitors could see what the “system” really consists of.

At the 6 hour event we gave away approximately 450 tote bags, 40 chip clips, 50 sticky pads, and 500 each of our educational brochures ( "Pesticide Herbicide & Fertilizer Use" and "Illegal Dumping and Illicit Discharges" ).

Debris can be harmful to wildlife

Nutrients (from leaves, grass, fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides) can lead to fish kills and excessive amounts of algae in the water

Bacteria (from pet waste and dead animals) can produce health concerns

Sediment can reduce the system's ability to handle potential flooding and adversely affect aquatic organizms

Chemicals, oils, and paints can be toxic to plants and animals
